Getting started
What is WroteAbout?
A blog for your travels that starts with a map. Mark the countries you've been to, add your trips, and write about them when you're ready, with blocks made for travel: your route, where you stayed, flights, what things cost, places you'd recommend.
Does it cost anything?
No. All the core features are free, and there are no ads. A few extras, like your own domain, may cost money later.
Do I have to write a blog?
No. Plenty of people only keep a map of where they've been, or a flight log. Turn off what you don't want in Edit profile, under Show on my blog, or with the switch at the top of each tab while you're on your blog.
How do I log in? There's no password.
We email you a code (and a link) each time, so there's nothing to remember or leak. You can also log in with one click with Google.
Your blog
What's my blog's address?
Your username, as yourname.wroteabout.com. Usernames can't be changed, because that would break every link people shared. If you really need a new one, write to us.
Can I use my own domain?
Not yet. It's on the way, and your blog will move over with it.
Can I change how my blog looks?
Yes. Pick a template in Edit profile: Default or Soft, each in two colours. It's free, and you can change it any time.
Can I leave parts of my blog out?
Yes. Stories, Map, Trips and Flights can each be hidden, and you can take boxes out of your blog's sidebar (the × in their corner) and put them back with the + under it. The + also adds About me, Year by year and Want to go, and the arrows on each box change their order. Visitors don't see what you hide.
Who can see my blog?
You choose in Edit profile: everyone, only people you approve, or only you. Each trip and story can be narrowed further, for example a story only you can see.
Will people know when I'm away from home?
Not unless you say so. Trips that are happening now or are still planned are only shown to you, until you choose to show them. We warn you before you do.
Writing
What are widgets?
Blocks you add to a story with the + or the toolbar: a map of the places, a stay, a flight, a video, Good to know, what it cost, a table, a recommendation, a recipe, a link to another story, and more. Use the ones that fit your trip.
Can AI write my stories?
It can write a first draft. Jot down a few notes (or use the notes and voice notes you saved on the trip) and Write with AI turns them into a story, using what the trip already knows: the places, the dates, your photo captions. Then you edit it like anything else. It never publishes by itself.
Can I publish a story later?
Yes. Open Publish later in the story's settings and pick a day and time. It goes out by itself, and we email you if something stops it.
Can someone read a draft before I publish it?
Yes. Share draft, in the story's preview, gives you a private link anyone can open without an account. Turn it off and the link stops working.
Is my writing saved?
As you type. Earlier versions are kept too, so you can go back if you change your mind.
Photos and privacy
Do my photos show where I took them?
No. Your browser makes a smaller copy of each photo before it's uploaded, and that copy has no location or camera details. The original never leaves your device. We keep the date it was taken, privately, to put photos on the right day.
Who can see my reader numbers?
Only you. Stats counts views and where readers came from, without cookies, IP addresses or anything that tells who read what.
Can I take my blog with me, or delete it?
Yes, both, whenever you like. Download my data gives you everything in a zip (your trips, stories as text, flights and photos), and Delete my account is in Edit profile.
Where do the pictures of places come from?
Trips without a photo of their own get a picture of the country or place, hand-picked from Unsplash. The photographers are named on Credits.
Readers
How do people keep up with my blog?
They can follow you with an account, or add yourname.wroteabout.com/feed to a feed reader. Followers' numbers are never shown publicly.
Why are the links in my stories plain text?
Links to other websites work once an account is a month old, has a trip with photos and has no open reports. Until then they show as plain text. It keeps spam off WroteAbout; links within WroteAbout always work.
